With as many as one in four adults saying

they haven't read a book in the last year you would think

buying books was in severe decline.

Half of men aged 16 to 24 haven't read a single book in the past 12 months,

making this group the least likely to read books.

Some people, including Victoria Beckham,

claim never to have read a book at all.

Then 40% of people admit to lying about having read certain books,

according to a study published last year,

half read the classics just because they think it makes them look more intelligent.

When did you last pick up a book to hunt out a nugget of information instead of Googling it ?

Or read a novel instead of powering up the PlayStation or the telly?

Books you would think are going out of fashion. Not a bit of it. Book sales around the world are huge and on the rise.

We may read for entertainment, to pass the time, to visit other worlds, to expand our sense of what is possible but books are essential because at their very heart is the storage of information.

Books offer unlimited storage of knowledge.

Books quite simply have the potential to open up new worlds for the reader and they are repositories of ideas and ideas empower people and broaden their horizons. Books unlimited offline in libraries and book stores and online in many different forms are full of ideas that need to be explored and exploited. Just because books are discounted or come under the cheap books banner is no reason to ignore them.

One of the strongest examples of this is the founding of over two thousand Carnegie Libraries in Europe, the United States, and the English speaking world in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

Andrew Carnegie was a Scottish immigrant to the United States in the mid-19th Century. It is said that as a young lad he was denied access to a library in his home town because he couldn’t afford the fee to join.

He vowed if he became rich he would provide free knowledge to all.

He was poor and was working full-time at the age of twelve. Despite his poor background and the discrimination he faced as an immigrant, he built an industrial empire based on the manufacturing of steel and when he sold his business empire and retired he was worth almost an estimated 400 million dollars.

His rags to riches story led him to believe that anyone who worked hard and smart could be successful.

The first of Carnegie's public libraries opened in his hometown, Dunfermline, Scotland, in 1883. As well as Carnegie's name, the building displays a motto - "Let there be light" - and a carving of the sun over the entrance.

His first library in the United States was built in 1889 in Braddock, Pennsylvania, home to one of the Carnegie Steel Company's mills. Initially, Carnegie limited his support to a small number of towns in which he had an interest. From the 1890s there was a great increase in the libraries funded.

Many self educated people have Andrew Carnegie to thank for the provision of accessable knowledge via his book libraries.

You can educate yourself by reading books on              getting rich, getting healthy, retiring, travel, make money from home, investing and the best mortgages.

Article 26 of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights gives everyone the right to education. Article 26.2 reads: “Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace”.

It is a sad fact that even where literacy levels are high, too many people never avail themselves of the knowledge that is accessable to them in books.

Books unlimited offline in libraries and book stores and online in many different forms are often ignored becuase they are given away free or come under the discounted books section. This is wrong ... because cheap books can make you rich.

Like the library - and then some
